Sisters Emma Henderson and Victoria Beattie are living the great Australian dream. Based on the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, their label, The Beach People, has organically grown and developed a cult following since its inception in 2013. Launching with a modern take on a utilitarian product, their original ‘Roundie’ beach towel has become a sea-side essential for many and can be seen on stretches of coast from Byron to Tulum. From where we’d rather be…

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and The Beach People story?
Victoria – The Beach People began in the Summer of 2013, Emma and I were sitting on the beach one day and she turned to me and said “I think I am going to create some Round Beach towels, super luxe and in beautiful designs… do you want to do that with me?” I obviously said yes and the rest is history…

Emma – We grew up around the seaside with entrepreneurial kind of eccentric parents so I guess The Beach People were always there and it was always going to happen…

Describe your morning routine?

Victoria – I’m up early to respond to any emails before the baby wakes – sipping on a lemon water… Then I make breakfast for my boys (husband Jesse, Son Theodore and Duke the dog). A few mornings a week I get up super early and swim or do yoga. I love early mornings as I work closely with my US team it’s when I have time with them.

Emma – Being a mum of 3 it’s usually lunches, school drops offs and then Saturdays it’s as little as possible..

What are your favourite hangouts on the Gold Coast?

Emma – Probably Kingscliff Creek on high tide – crystal clear water..

Victoria – A local dinner at Halcyon in Cabarita or Taverna in Kingscliff. To be completely honest we rarely cross the border north…

What Australian beaches would we find you and your family at?

Emma – Kingscliff, Fingal and Wategos

Victoria – We literally do everything together so same… ha!

Can you give us a little insight into what influences your designs?

Emma – Fashion, Architecture and nature

Victoria – I am more inspired by nature, travel, people, story telling and culture…
What local creatives are you most inspired by at the moment?

Victoria – Kara Rosenlund as I am a huge lover of this beautiful country, and all things Australiana

Emma – Sibella Court seems to make no mistakes and I am always inspired by her

What projects are you looking forward to?

Victoria – We are in the middle of designing our next collection to be released this Summer. So exciting…

Emma – Our bedding range releases shortly and it’s made of the most beautiful linen, something that we are very very proud of..
